To play devil’s advocate re: “free expression of religion in the US”: what about Islam? I noticed you conspicuously ignored that, or was it a slip of the brain? Honestly, I don’t like creches on public property, and menorahs on public property make me uncomfortable too. Christmas trees I have no problem with, because they’ve been secularized to the nth degree anyways. What’s to keep someone from erecting a statue of Ganesha or Krishna during a major Hindu holiday, such as Diwali?
As a disclaimer, I know that Muslims don’t erect displays for their holidays, I’m just asking for the sake of arguing.
