Hallel…..For Hallel Ariel
Last week, 13 year-old Hallel Ariel was slaughtered in her bed by a sub-human, hate-filled palestinian. When there was no more space to plunge the knife on the little girl’s chest and face, the arab turned her over and continued stabbing on her back.
Jews mourn their dead by the family sitting “shiva” in the home for seven days, not leaving the house, receiving visitors to console them and share memories of the deceased. The bereaved family does not even leave the house for the thrice-daily prayers mandated by Jewish Law. A quorum of 10 is gathered three times per day in the house of the mourners and prayers are conducted there, including recitation of the “mourner’s Kaddish” in honor of the dead.
Today is “Rosh Chodesh”, the first day of the Jewish month of Tammuz. Special prayers are added on this occasion every month, being a minor holiday of sorts, as they were in the mourning home of the Ariel Family. One of the prayers recited is the collection of King David’s Psalms known as “Hallel”, prayers of praise and thanks to God, our Creator in Heaven.
Even in the hours of our deepest despair, we, the Jews, are only strengthened in our belief, our faith and our love for God. As the moon is renewed, month after month, year after year, so is the Jewish People, God’s chosen Children.
Listen here, as Singer, Rabbi and Teacher, Shlomo Katz leads the gathering of mourners, friends and family at the Ariel house of mourning in the singing of the “Hallel” prayer…Hallel for Hallel.
