Anti-Israel “Apartheid Week” Turns Ugly on UC Berkeley’s Campus
Written by Marty Roberts on March 9, 2010 – 5:45 pm -I remember when being liberal was about human rights for EVERYONE, not just those that shared your own personal viewpoint. That concept seems to have gone the way of calypso pants and penny loafers. Now, it’s “If you don’t agree with me…Shut up, or I’ll break your f–ing face”.
It’s getting more dangerous every day to be a Jew in America, especially on the “liberal” university campuses. I wasn’t around in Germany in the ’30s, but they tell me…

Anti-Israel Activist Attacks Jewish Girl on Campus
University of California at Berkeley was again the site of a clash involving pro-Israel and anti-Israel activists last Friday when Husam Zakharia, leader of the Students for Justice in Palestine, assaulted Jessica Felber of the pro-Israel Tikvah group with a shopping cart
Reprinted from INN Avi Yellin
The incident occurred during competing events from the SJP-run “Israel Apartheid Week” and “Israel Peace and Diversity Week” organized by Tikvah. Felber was holding a sign that read “Israel Wants Peace” when Zakharia intentionally slammed her from behind with a shopping cart filled with toys donated for the welfare of Arab children in the Hamas-controlled Gaza region.Felber told Israel National News that she responded to the incident by immediately placing her attacker under citizens’ arrest. Police arrested him later that day and Felber expressed hope that the District Attorney will see the case through and file charges against Zakharia.
Felber said that Friday’s incident was not the first time Zakharia used violence against pro-Israel advocates. According to her, physical intimidation has frequently been employed as a tool by SJP to silence students opposing their anti-Zionist activities on campus. “SJP students have been terrorizing us for three years with intimidation, accusations and threats. This incident is simply the culmination of it all and we are not going to tolerate it anymore.”
SJP’s tactics backfired on at least one occasion when, in November 2008, the group attempted to disrupt a concert organized by the Zionist Freedom Alliance during “Israel Liberation Week” on the UC Berkeley campus. After striking a ZFA activist in the head, Zakharia found himself beaten to the ground. Following the incident, Zakharia and two fellow SJP members, along with two Zionist activists, were cited for battery but no charges were officially filed.
The UC Berkeley Hillel and leaders of the California Bay Area Jewish community condemned the violence at the time but made no moral distinction between SJP and ZFA. This time around, however, Felber said Hillel and many other Jewish organizations have been very supportive and she expressed hope that SJP will no longer be able to intimidate her or other students on campus.

Fight The Anti-Semitic “Israel Apartheid Week” Festivities
Written by Marty Roberts on March 3, 2010 – 3:44 pm -Given that there is nothing like apartheid whatsoever in Israel, these global university celebrations are even MORE disgusting…Join the effort to fight this sick, hateful anti-semitic ritual…

Pro-Israel groups set to counter campus apartheid claims
At universities across the globe, the annual springtime ritual known as Israel Apartheid Week is kicking off this week, and Jewish students and pro-Israel groups have been readying themselves to respond in force.
Reprinted from JTA
Unlike past years, when intense pro-Palestinian activity in the wake of Israel’s offensives in Gaza and Lebanon caught many Jewish students off guard, this year the pro-Israel community is ready with initiatives of its own.The largest effort, Israel Peace Week, is helping coordinate responses at 28 campuses and counting. StandWithUs, the Los-Angeles based pro-Israel group, is promoting a U.S. speaking tour by Israeli soldiers to counter claims that the Israel Defense Forces engaged in widespread misconduct during 2009 offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The David Project, the Anti-Defamation League and CAMERA all have made material available online to counter the apartheid charge and help students disseminate pro-Israel literature.
Hasbara Fellowships, a campus Israel group affiliated with the outreach group Aish Hatorah, is promoting a film about anti-Semitism on campus through the Web site Campus Intifada. And in Canada, where Israel Apartheid Week activity is often far more intense than in the United States, a pro-Israel initiative called Size Doesn’t Matter enjoyed a brief spell of notoriety when it released a sexually suggestive video that spoofed Israel’s smallness.
Continuing the below-the-belt theme, the pro-Israel PR house BlueStar released a poster with information about how to cure “Anis” — Anti-Israel Fixation Syndrome.
“On the pro-Israel side, I think there’s much more of a focus on this week than I’ve ever seen before,” said Eliot Mathias, the director of Hasbara Fellowships. “So many different organizations and groups. There is more of an awareness of what’s happening.”
Now in its sixth year, Israel Apartheid Week is actually two weeks, running March 1-14. Mainly confined to university campuses, the internationally coordinated series of events aims to reinforce the analogy between Israel and Apartheid South Africa and strengthen the activist tools that helped bring that regime to its knees.
Events often employ an element of political street theater — obstructing campus byways, for instance, with mock Israeli checkpoints or an “apartheid wall” — in addition to more conventional lectures and film screenings. Israel Apartheid Week is closely aligned with the so-called BDS movement — an acronym for boycott, divestment and sanctions — and calls for an end to Israel’s “occupation and colonization of all Arab lands” and the right to return of Palestinian refugees.
Given the harsh rhetoric and strident anti-Israel policies encouraged by the events, Israel Apartheid Week has united a broad spectrum of Jewish groups that while often agreeing on few other Middle East questions, have all condemned the Israel-South Africa analogy as illegitimate and anti-peace.
Joining StandWithUs, the David Project and Hasbara Fellowships in their condemnation of Israel Apartheid Week is J Street and its campus arm, J Street U, and the liberal Zionist group Ameinu.
J Street has taken a slightly different tack than the other groups, largely eschewing on-campus flyers in favor of a campaign it calls Invest Don’t Divest, which aims to promote fund raising for cooperative efforts between Israelis and Palestinians that “help set the context for a sustainable peace.” A spokesperson for J Street told JTA the group did not want its “nuanced pragmatic” approach to get lost in the “shouting match” that some groups engage in during Israel Apartheid Week.
And inevitably, the shouting does happen. Israel Apartheid Week reliably brings at least a few speakers each year who shock the campus Jewish community by tiptoeing ever so close to the line separating ant-Zionism with outright anti-Semitism — and arguably marching right over it.
Even so, the wider significance of Israel Apartheid Week is a matter of some dispute in the pro-Israel community. At many, if not most, American schools, little or nothing is done for Israel Apartheid Week, whose official Web site lists events in 45 locations, only about a quarter of them in the United States. Anti-Israel activists at some schools — like the much-discussed University of California, Irvine — run apartheid activities other weeks that are not listed on the official site.
“In the U.S., I’m aware of some isolated pockets of activity, but in five years that IAW has been running, we haven’t seen it catch on in the mainstream campus community,” said Stephen Kuperberg, the director of the Israel on Campus Coalition, an umbrella group comprising 30 groups.
Still, virtually everyone in the pro-Israel campus community agrees that the frequency and intensity of apartheid/BDS activity is growing. And some even link it to a spike in anti-Semitic activity on campuses. At the University of California, Davis last week, a Jewish student found a swastika carved into her dorm door.
“I think it’s absolutely a big deal,” said Lawrence Muscant, the acting executive director of the David Project. “The fallacious lie of Israeli apartheid is seeping into the maintream. It’s extremely disturbing.”

Apartheid in Israel…Afraid Not
Written by Marty Roberts on March 3, 2010 – 3:28 pm -Israeli Army troops on Israel’s border with Egypt spend a good bit of their time escorting these African refugees IN to Israel. They take them to Tel-Aviv, where they are processed and receive health care, warm beds and food…just what they were seeking. No one in Israel is shooting at them. That is why they keep on trying to come to Israel, even if the Egyptians take target practice on their bodies.
BTW, these refugees are NOT Jewish…
They ARE black-skinned…
Kind of throws a monkey wrench into the “Israel Apartheid Week” celebrations taking place on university campuses this week, doesn’t it?..but who said you had to have intelligence to attend university…even more so to TEACH there…(or to be president of the US aka Jimmy Carter)…
There is NOTHING even remotely resembling apartheid in Israel…period.

The official says the shot migrant, whose nationality was not known, refused to surrender after guards fired warning shots south of Rafah early Sunday.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

UN urges Egypt to stop shooting at migrants
Egyptian forces deliberately kill asylum seekers on Israel border, UN human rights chief says
Reprinted from YNet News
The UN human rights chief on Tuesday urged Egyptian forces to stop shooting at African migrants trying to enter Israel illegally through Egypt, after 60 were killed in the past two and a half years.“While migrants often lose their lives accidentally when travelling in over-crowded boats, or trying to cross remote land borders, I know of no other country where so many unarmed migrants and asylum seekers appear to have been deliberately killed in this way by government forces,” Navi Pillay said.
“It is a deplorable state of affairs, and the sheer number of victims suggests that at least some Egyptian security officials have been operating a shoot-to-kill policy…60 killings can hardly be an accident.”
Most of the migrants hail from sub-Saharan Africa’s Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia, and have been heading for Israel. The latest victim was killed at the weekend, bringing the number of fatal shootings to nine in the first two months of 2010 alone.
“The Egyptian government should issue an immediate order to its security forces to ensure that firearms are used in strict compliance with international standards,” said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in a statement.
She also urged an “independent and credible inquiry into the killings.”
“There needs to be clarity about what has occurred, what policies have been applied to migrants trying to cross this border, and what specific orders have been given to security forces patrolling the area.”

Just Another Excuse for Anti-Israel Hatred and Violence
Written by Marty Roberts on March 2, 2010 – 11:53 am -It is very obvious to us here, in Israel, that the palestinians are making a concentrated effort to stir things up in the region. They are using Israel’s statement about Jewish heritage to stimulate a conflagration of violence, which they hope will spread throughout the region, leading to war and, ultimately, Israel’s annihilation (they hope). No state-building, no building of infrastructure, no building of institutions, no economic development…Just hatred and violence. They don’t want a state, they want to eliminate the existing state of Israel. that is enough to satisfy palestinian aspirations. They don’ have what it takes to build a nation. Maybe because they are NOT really a nation…just a collection of wandering arabs from the region…THAT is the reality…We have seen this SO many times before, but the world just buys it, lock, stock and barrel. Any excuse for anti-semitism, anti-israel-ism…

ME anger at Israeli ‘escalations’
Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protestors over the issue of holy sites have provoked a wave of condemnation in the Arab press for Israel’s behaviour
Reprinted from BBC News
On Sunday several Palestinians were arrested after Israeli security forces entered the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem. The incident followed clashes in the West Bank town of Hebron on Friday over Israel’s decision to list two disputed shrines as heritage sites. The Palestinian press painted Israel’s actions as a deliberate attempt to escalate conflict in the region. Newspapers in the Middle East condemned what was perceived as a concerted effort to oppress Islamic identity and set back the peace process.
In Israel, one editorial acknowledged that the decision to list the disputed shrines may have been a “tactical mistake”, while another commentator attacked the US response to the issue.
EDITORIAL IN PALESTINIAN AL-QUDS
The fresh Israeli aggression against the sanctity of the al-Aqsa mosque, and the attacks on worshippers by the Israeli security apparatus, represent the latest in a series of Israeli escalations over the past few weeks… they show that [Israel] is determined to escalate and even expand the conflict.
AYMAN ABU-NAHIYAH IN PALESTINIAN FILASTIN
The Judaization of Hebron… is a prelude to the Judaization of the al-Aqsa mosque and the rest of Palestine… this will include the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes and the seizure of their properties.
TALAL AKWAL IN PALESTINIAN AL-AYYAM
The US silence shows that ongoing attempts to resume negotiations have stalled and that those might have to wait until after a new Palestinian intifadah or even war.
EDITORIAL IN EGYPT’S AL-JUMHURIYAH
Israeli plans to Judaize the al-Aqsa mosque and other occupied Islamic places are being implemented without any respect to religious or man-made laws… these extremely racist practices will not halt… until Arab and Islamic countries have the teeth to enforce international law.
EDITORIAL IN SAUDI AL-JAZIRAH
The Israelis are working incessantly to change everything in Palestine and give it a Jewish aspect in a bid to wipe out Arab and Islamic identity… meanwhile, Arabs and Muslims are preoccupied [with their own affairs] while the Palestinians are preparing to fight each other.
EDITORIAL IN IRAN’S AL-VEFAGH
Israel’s plan to swallow Palestine has reached a peak… its project is to wipe Palestine from the map… an escalation rather than a settlement is looming in the region.
EDITORIAL IN SYRIA’S AL-BA’TH
The Israeli occupation of holy sites and the symbols of Palestinian heritage is part of a comprehensive Israeli war to Judaize the Palestinian areas and eliminate their Arab and Islamic identity.
OFIR HAIVRI IN ISRAEL’S YEDIOT AHARANOT
The [US] State Department spokesman Mark Toner has condemned the inclusion of the Cave of the Patriarchs and Rachel’s Tomb in the list of Jewish heritage sites… the State Department did not bother to demand details… the way the matter was dealt with… is not only amateurish but could also have disastrous implications for an explosive region like ours.
EDITORIAL IN ISRAEL’S JERSULALEM POST
The Jewish people’s historic connection to the sites in question does not require cabinet approval to be deemed legitimate… the [national heritage] list could have been left ambiguous… still, if [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu made a tactical mistake, the immediate Palestinian resort to violence was deliberate and inexcusable.

American Jews: You Need to Support Israel…NOW
Written by Marty Roberts on February 24, 2010 – 7:32 pm -The Israeli ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, says it best…So, how about it, friends?…

Jerusalem Post
“In spite of some of the differences that sometimes divide you and in spite of the differences you may have with our decisions, respect them, for they have been made by the majority of Israelis, through one of the world’s most resilient democracies,” he said Sunday night, addressing the Jewish Council for Public Affairs annual plenum in Dallas, Texas.
In blunt words, he urged American Jews to support Israel while it is at a “crucial crossroads” in the peace process.
“Support us, too, if we decide the peace being offered us is not a real peace and does not warrant those sacrifices and risks,” he said. “Join us in fighting for Israel’s right to defend itself, in fighting for Israel’s right to exist.”
The comments, which seemed directed at the US administration’s frustration with the peace process, also come after Oren softened his view of J Street, the self-described “pro-peace, pro-Israel” lobby. The Netanyahu government has had an uneasy relationship with J Street, and this past fall Oren pointedly declined an invitation to attend the group’s kick-off policy conference in Washington.
But in a February 10 interview with the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, Oren said J Street had moved “much more into the mainstream.”
“The major concern with J Street was their position on security issues, not the peace process. J Street has now come and supported Congressman [Howard] Berman’s Iran sanction bill; it has condemned the Goldstone Report; it has denounced the British court’s decision to try Tzipi Livni for war crimes, which puts J Street much more into the mainstream,” Oren said.
The ambassador opened his talk on Sunday by discussing another speech, given on February 8 at the University of California, Irvine, where 11 students heckled him off the stage. He returned and finished his speech, and the students were later arrested.
“Their goal was to undermine the freedom of expression and at the same time to delegitimize the Jewish state,” he said.
“Civility, the ability to hear others’ opinions and be heard, is an essential weapon in Israel’s defense. We have a case to be made,” he said.
During his talk Sunday, Oren referenced “long-simmering issues” between American and Israeli Jews.
“While Israelis turned toward the center and right,” he said, “American Jews gravitated in the other direction, casting 80 percent of their ballots for Barack Obama.”
Mentioning issues of conversion, he also focused on the “Women of the Wall” incident at the Kotel earlier this month, when 200 women wearing tallit were heckled and called Nazis by haredi men.
“There are good solutions for the issues at the Kotel,” he said during a question-and-answer session. “It will require compromise on everyone’s behalf.”

Anti-Semitism…The “New”, “PC” Variety
Written by Marty Roberts on February 22, 2010 – 3:30 pm -This is another example of the “New Anti-Semitism”…That is, good old-fashioned Jew-hating clothed in the mantle of “anti-Zionism”. “I don’t hate Jews, just the Zionist ones. It’s about Israel, not Judaism, they say.” “The persecution of the poor palestinians.” Boloney, BS, cockey, poo….The same old anti-Semitism in it’s modern, politically- correct form. They’ve found a way for their bigotry and hatred to become acceptable, once again, in the parlors of high society…
Just like it was in the 1930’s and 1940’s…before the Holocaust…

The UK and Israel have rarely had an easy relationship
UK officer says views of Israeli forces ‘anti-Semitic’
A former senior British army officer has said international media including the BBC are being exploited by “dark forces” who want to harm Israel.
By John McManus
BBC News
Col Richard Kemp, who was a commander in Afghanistan, said some international criticism of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) was motivated by anti-Semitism.
He was speaking at a dinner in London hosted by a pro-Israel lobby group.
Col Kemp had defended the actions of the IDF at the UN Goldstone Hearings into the Gaza incursion of 2008.
The Israeli minister for Information and the Diaspora, Yuli Edelstein, was also present at the dinner hosted by the Zionist Federation.
He refused to comment on rumours that the Israeli secret service Mossad had fraudulently used the passports of British citizens during an operation to kill the Hamas boss Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
Col Kemp, who is now retired from the Army and makes a living from writing, said the advice he received from the Israeli armed forces on how to tackle Afghan suicide bombers had been invaluable, and formed the basis of official army guidelines used by soldiers on the ground there.

The Right to Free Speech Does NOT Mean Do Anything That You Want
