Israel – The Land of Medical Opportunities

When people here of Israel, they usually think of the country in one of two contexts. The first is the on-going political context Israel is constantly in, due to the country’s location and geopolitical climate. The second is the tourism destination, usually emphasizing the holy attractions and places sacred to the main religions. As it turns out, the Middle Eastern country both enjoys the benefits and suffers from the consequences of its delicate location. On the one hand, Israel is one of the most beautiful and interesting places one can visit, on the other, it can often be a point of controversy.

Unfortunately, the majority of people are not familiar with the other sides Israel has to offer. In addition to the rich history, magnificent beaches and legendary weather, Israel is also known as a leading medical innovator, always on the forefront of medical technology and research in the global industry, offering the highest medical standards in the world.

It may surprise some, but Israel has become a central medical tourism destination attracting thousands of medical tourists every year, visiting its state-of-the-art medical centers for different treatments, along with its natural resource attractions such as the Dead Sea and other hot springs spas around the country.

Medical Tourism
But before we take a look at the central medical services that the Israeli medical tourism industry has to offer, we will first answer the broader question of “What is medical tourism”?

The term medical tourism describes a global phenomenon in which patients travel across national borders in order to receive medical treatments of any sort. Although some may think that this is a new trend that has developed recently, it has been documented that patients have been traveling for health reasons for centuries.

In the past couple of decades the industry has begun to blossom once again thanks to a rapid improvement in transportation means and the fact that the internet has made our world grow smaller. People who were unable to receive proper medical care in their own country are suddenly free to pursue their options elsewhere. This can be due to improper medical insurance (or none at all) which leads to patient being unable to afford surgery, long waiting lists which force patients to wait months and even years to undergo specific operations or simply patients who have the means and would rather travel to countries with better or more advanced medical technology and research in a specific medical field.

Combine these facts with the Israel’s medical attractions and medical centers and there is no surprise in Israel’s top medical tourism status.

Medical Tourism in Israel
Israel hasn’t become a popular medical tourism destination for nothing. There are many central medical attractions in the country.

The Dead Sea
One of the main natural resources people come to Israel for is the Dead Sea. Located outside of Jerusalem, the Dead Sea is one of the most popular spa destinations in the world for treating different types of psoriasis, rheumatic diseases (joints and muscles), respiratory diseases (such as asthma, cystic fibrosis) and more. This attraction has become popular due to its health promoting conditions that include the high density salty sea with an unusual salt composition, thermo-mineral springs and a special natural mud, a unique solar irradiation and an increased oxygen density.

Hot Spring Therapy
Another famous attraction is the hot springs around the country dealing with hot spring therapy. A hot spring of this sort is produced by the emergence of geothermal heated groundwater from the Earth’s crust. These waters are full of minerals which are known to have potential healing powers. Bathing in a hot spring may assist with enhancing your metabolism, relieving aching joints, improving blood circulation, promoting a physical and psychological well-being and more. Israel has many hot spring sites including: Hamat Gader, Ga’ash, Tiberias, Yoav (in the south), Ein Gedi and more.

IVF Treatments
On top of these natural resources, Israeli medicine excels in some specific fields, IVF treatments being one of them. Israel is one of the leading countries in the world in research and treatment in the field of fertility, as around 5% births in Israel are a result of IVF (well above the percentage in other western countries). In addition, Israel is the global leader in fertility clinics and fertility procedures performed per capita ratio.

Cancer Treatments & Research
Another field of excellence of Israeli medicine is the cancer treatment and research field. Israeli cancer treatment and research centers are very advanced, as people from other countries often prefer to undergo different cancer treatment plans in Israel then in their own home country due to the level of expertise available in the country.

On top of these, Israeli medical centers have always offered the best medical care available in state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics. As all hospitals in the country are kept under the strictest protocols, No less than 7 Israeli medical centers have received the prestigious JCI accreditation.
