Chile Becomes First Foreign Country to Buy Elbit’s New UAV

Chile has become the first foreign country to buy the new Hermes 900 UAV from Elbit Systems. The amount of the deal has not been published, but is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars. In addition, Elbit will supply ground control stations and payload systems. According to sources in the industry, Chile will deploy the Hermes 900 UAV for reconnaissance missions along its coast, which will save money. The IAF is testing the Hermes 900, and the model is expected to be cleared as operational within a few months.

Poultry Council inspectors seize van carrying 1.5 tons of rotten beef from Palestinian Authority on eve of Passover. Meat originally transferred to Palestinians as humanitarian gesture from Brazil

The Poultry Council’s enforcement unit this week thwarted the smuggling of 1.5 tons of rotten meat from the Palestinian Authority into Israel. The beef was transferred to the Palestinians as a humanitarian gesture from Brazil, but after it went bad, they decided to try to market it in Israel.

The stale meat was seized Saturday night, after Poultry Council inspectors spotted a Toyota van making its way from Umm Reihan to Barta’a in the Wadi Ara region.

The inspectors, who were waiting to catch egg smugglers, realized that the vehicle was making its way to northern Israel with goods from the territories. “The vehicle appeared to be sinking as the merchandise was so heavy,” said Tomer Rahamim of the enforcement unit.

‘Gastric trouble avoided’

The inspectors ordered the driver to stop near a Border Guard base in Harish, and found 70 boxes inside the vehicle, carrying 24 kilograms of meat each.

The van’s driver said he was asked to transfer the goods from a truck which came from the territories to a truck on Highway 65 in Wadi Ara. According to Rahamim, “The driver said the truck waiting for him on the road was to market the meat in the northern region.”

The driver, a resident of the Arab town of Tayibe, was detained for questioning and will be indicted in the coming days. The rotten meat was handed over to the Agriculture Ministry and was destroyed. An examination revealed that it was transferred to the PA from Brazil.

“They took the good meat, and tried to market the meat that went bad. They replaced the old stickers with a new expiry date,” said Rahamim. “This meat is kept and transported without any veterinary conditions, and when it reaches restaurants and stores the buyer has no idea where it came from. I assume that had the meat reached its destination, many people would have suffered from gastric trouble during Passover.”

Members of the Poultry Council’s enforcement unit are working day and night to prevent the smuggling of eggs from the PA into Israel. Some 6,000 eggs caught on three different occasions this week have been destroyed.

What kind of diplomacy is this? Why did the Brazilian hate-monger even bother coming to Israel? At least Israel’s Foreign Minister has enough self-respect and dignity to publicly “return the favor” by not pretending diplomatic, PC niceties in the face of brazen insults by the Brazilian president. Good for you, Lieberman.
It appears that Brazil is, indeed, turning in the right direction by embracing Ahmadinejad and Iran. Maybe they can find a way to resurrect all the dead Nazis that found a comfortable end to their days in the South American country once their Jew-killing had come to an end. Then Brazil could REALLY rejoice…

Brazil’s Leader Snubs Mt. Herzl but Will Visit Arafat’s Grave


Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman boycotted Monday’s speech to the Knesset by visiting Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva in retaliation for the visitor’s refusal to attend a customary wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Zionist founder Theodore Herzl.

However Lula, whose country is being embraced by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, plans to pay his respects at the grave of Yasser Arafat in Ramallah.

In another display of a new kind of diplomacy that foregoes niceties in the face of foreign countries’ snubs of Israel, Lieberman’s office said that Lula’s departure from the accepted practice of visiting Herzl’s grave is a serious matter.

Last July, the Israeli Foreign Minister visited Lula as part of a 10-day trip to try to improve economic cooperation with South America while deflecting Iranian overtures in the region. On the eve of his visit, a leading member of Lula’s party called Lieberman “a racist and a fascist.”

Both President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told Lula of the dangers of the Iranian regime, but Lula was one of the first international leaders to recognize the re-election of Ahmadinejad last June, despite widespread charges that the vote was rigged.

Brazil has shown signs of drifting towards the Iranian-Hizbullah-Venezuela axis while improving trade relations with Israel. Lula announced on Monday its final approval for a free grade agreement between Israel and the Mercosur bloc, a regional traded agreement that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
