Purim is one of the stranger Jewish Holiday…but it also shares the distinction, with only ONE other Holy Day, Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement, as being singled out in the Talmud for the ONLY TWO holidays that will continue to be celebrated in The World-to-Come!!!

What’s so special about this day?

The story of Purim details the saving of the Jewish People, living in exile in Persia, from total destruction, the original “Final Solution” of the evil Haman. The salvation is clearly made possible by a series of miraculous events…but NOT ONCE is the Name of G-d mentioned in the entire story!!!! All of the miracles take place within the framework of “nature”. And what, after all, is “nature”, anyway?

Maybe THAT is exactly the message!!!

Today, we are talking about “Purim Katan”, or “Little” Purim. This year is a “leap year” in the Jewish calendar.

The Jewish calendar is a complicated combination of Lunar (moon-based) months, joined together to make up a solar year. This makes the individual months predictable, but can lead to problems with the seasons staying attached to particular months!!! (as they DO NOT in the Moslem lunar calendar)

The ancient Jewish Sages, who were quite expert in astronomy, and they developed a nineteen-year cycle, which included seven “leap years”, each providing for an additional month. This repeating cycle assures a regular, steady flow of the months, while keeping the holidays in their proper seasons!!!!
