Thoughts and Worries of a Teenager

Need I say more?
Some things are universal…
Somethings are eternal…
Thoughts and Worries of a Teenager in Israel

When compulsory military service is added to the mix, things become a bit more complex…
Especially when your country is involved in a seemingly eternal armed conflict…
Duty calls, and it becomes a critical part of the “growing up” experience for a teenager in Israel…
Thoughts and Worries of a Religious Jewish Teenager in Israel

A teenager studying in a zionistic yeshiva high school probes even deeper, to the depths of the religious and spiritual dimensions of the daily news headlines…
They are amongst the strongest believers in the Creator, the G-d of the Jewish People, the imminence of the Final Redemption…
Their love for the Land of Israel can be unequaled, as can their pain at the thought of a Jewish government willingly abandoning part of our Divine Heritage…
Yeshiva High School – Kiryat Arba

Yeshiva Tichonit Kiryat Arba AKA “YATKA”, Kiryat Arba Yeshiva High School…
I cannot think of a better environment for a Jewish teenager to spend his high school years…

Israel’s War Against Palestinian Terror – What is the true JEWISH Response?
Written by Marty Roberts on July 6, 2010 – 1:03 pm -A classic post and podcast from the archives!!!

Marty shares his ideas on the “Israel’s War: The Jewish Response to Terror”(Originally recorded Jan. 2004, but just as relevant today!!)
Jews Building the Land of Israel
Some things don’t seem to change. Israel’s war against Palestinian terror continues, day in, day out. The Israeli Army continues fighting against them, albeit, sometimes, seemingly with one hand tied behind their back. How is it that one of the strongest armies in the world cannot defeat Palestinian Islamic terrorists?
The reason is that the Israeli Army is the most moral army in the world!!!, being the army of the Jewish State of Israel. Israels war is not a regular war, not a conventional war.
Time and again, Jewish blood is spilled fighting the enemy, while going above and beyond what should be expected in a brutal, bloody war. The Israeli Army makes every effort to spare the lives of innocent Arab citizens, far too often at the expense of her own soldiers’ lives and limbs. Israel’s war is a brutal war.
This is the case, even as the cold-blooded terrorists use these same innocent woman and children as “human shields”. They hide behind old women and children. They use teenage girls with school backpacks on their shoulders as decoys and “test targets” for Israeli soldiers. They use grey-bearded old men and young children to transport their weapons and explosives, often in ambulances. They launch missiles from populated areas. They prepare bombs in elderly peoples homes and hospitals. They shoot from churches, schools and from Mosques. Israel’s war is a savage war.
At the same time that the Israeli Army is holding itself back from utterly destroying the enemy, the enemy Arab terrorists are ruthlessly shooting at women and children who are just driving to school in their cars. They blow up buses and restaurants, filled with Jews (and, often, Israeli Arabs, as well) guilty of nothing more than going about their daily business…trying to lead a normal life. They maim and kill fathers driving to and from work, trying to support their families.
A sniper sets his sights on a 2-year old girl in a stroller. Another coldly approaches a car and executes a Jewish mother and all of her daughters, one after the other, with bullets to the head from close range. An Arab worker slits the throat of his Jewish employer of many years (and then his brethren complain that they cannot come to work in Israel!!!) A Jewish mother has HER throat slit as her adolescent daughter looks on in horror. This is Israel’s war.
We must continue to fight this evil…this evil that wants to see the destruction and total elimination of the State of Israel and the Jewish People. We certainly must NOT give them what they want….
That is, we must NOT flee, we must NOT abandon our land and its thriving communities.
Indeed, it’s exactly the OPPOSITE of abandoning and running that is required….
The OPPOSITE of up-rooting thriving Jewish communities and forcing the Jewish residents out of their homes….
We must BUILD, and we must GROW and we must FLOURISH in our eternal Homeland, Israel.
Hebron-The Cave of the Patriarchs
The Jewish answer to those that seek to destroy us is to build community after community….to bring more and more Jews to settle in the land of Israel….to build and to be fruitful and to multiply….to produce more and more beautiful, precious Jewish children….more children to learn and study in Jewish schools in Israel….more Jews living in Israeli communities to pray in Jewish synagogues in Israel….more Jewish families to celebrate their weddings and Bar-Mitzvahs at the Jewish Holy Places….Hebron, The City of Our Forefathers….Jerusalem, the holiest city on earth and the Jewish capitol for more than 3000 years….Beit El, Shechem, Tiberius, all of the ancient Jewish towns and cities described in the Holy Bible
Build Israel….
Grow in Israel….
Bring the Jews home to flourish in Israel….
Build….Grow….Flourish
THIS is Israel’s war….
THIS is the JEWISH answer to the terror war against us!!!!

Is Your Dog Really Jewish?
Written by Marty Roberts on April 18, 2010 – 5:04 pm -So, it looks like research out of California will show that not only are Jews in ancient Israel responsible for bringing all the major monotheistic religions to mankind, but also, man’s best friend.
It is looking like your lovely little pooch is also descended from ancient Israeli roots.
Well, most dogs DO have rather large noses…
Word has it that the Arabs are already crying “foul”, claiming that Jewish dogs have no connection whatsoever to Jewish or Gentile dogs…
Israeli dogs participate in CA study on canine origin
Middle East seems a probable origin of the domesticated dog, descending from grey wolves.
Reprinted from Jpost.com Judy Siegel
New genetic data collected by California scientists and reported in the advance online edition of the journal Nature have found that modern dogs likely originated from wolves in the Middle East. But although blood samples have been taken for the research from dogs in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran, it is not yet clear in what specific area this occurred. The online publication Science Daily reported this week that the origin of domesticated dogs – derived from gray wolves – used to be attributed to Asia or Europe, but it now seems this is not true.
“Dogs seem to share more genetic similarity with Middle Eastern gray wolves than with any other wolf population worldwide,” said ecology and evolutionary biology Prof. Robert Wayne of the University of California at Los Angeles, who was a senior author of the Nature paper.
“Genome-wide analysis now directly suggests a Middle East origin for modern dogs,” he said.
“This is the same area where domestic cats and many of our livestock originated and where agriculture first developed,” Wayne added.
Previous genetic research suggested an East Asian origin for dogs, “which was unexpected,” Wayne said, “because there was never a hint in the archeological record that dogs evolved there.”
“We were able to study a broader sampling of wolves globally than has ever been done before, including Middle Eastern wolves,” said the paper’s lead author, Bridgett von Holdt, a UCLA graduate student in Wayne’s lab who studies the genetics of dog domestication.
“In our analysis of the entire genome, we found that dogs share more unique markers with Middle Eastern wolves than with East Asian wolves. We used a genome-wide approach, which avoids the bias of single genome region,” she said.
The team studied genetic data from more than 900 dogs from 85 breeds (including all the leading ones) and more than 200 wild gray wolves worldwide, including populations from North America, Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. They used molecular genetic techniques to analyze more than 48,000 genetic markers, far more than any previous study anywhere.
The study is unique in using a particular technology called a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping chip, which examines the nucleotides at 48,000 locations in the genome, Science Daily quoted UCLA Prof. John Novembre as saying.
The team was able to compare dogs looking at not just one small part of the genome, but a very large part of it.
“That gives us the fine-scale resolution to analyze how these breeds are related to one another and how they are related to wolves,” said Wayne.
Previous genetic research had suggested an East Asian origin based on the higher diversity of mitochondrial sequences in East Asia and China than anywhere else in the world. However, that research was based on only one sequence, a small part of the mitochondrial genome, Wayne noted.
“What we found is much more consistent with the archeological record,” he said.
The UCLA-led team members, who were helped by scientists in Israel, China, Australia, Europe and Canada, said they found strong kinship to Middle Eastern gray wolves and, to some extent, European gray wolves – but much less so to any wolves from East Asia.
“Our findings strongly contradict the conclusions based on earlier mitochondrial DNA sequence data,” Wayne said.
They explained that 80 percent of dog breeds are modern breeds that evolved in the last few hundred years, but some dog breeds have ancient histories that go back thousands of years.
“We sampled both groups, the modern explosion of dog breeds and some of the ancient lineages,” Wayne said. “Our data were aimed at resolving questions about the origin of domestic dogs, the evolution of dog breeds, and the history of dog breeds and relationships to their closest wild progenitor, the gray wolf.”
The first dogs that appeared in the Middle Eastern archeological record date back some 12,000 to 13,000 years, Wayne said. Wolves have been in the Old World for hundreds of thousands of years. The oldest dogs from the archeological record come from Europe and Western Russia. A dog from Belgium dates back 31,000 years, and a group of dogs from Western Russia is approximately 15,000 years old, he continued.
“We know that dogs from the Middle East were closely associated with humans because they were found in ancient human burial sites,” Wayne noted. “In one case, a puppy is curled up in the arms of a buried human.”
Some very old strains of dogs – with a history dating back more than several thousand years – may be mixed with modern breeds, enhancing their diversity in certain areas such as East Asia, Wayne said, interpreting the higher mitochondrial DNA diversity in that area of the globe.
Short-legged dogs – there are at least 19 such breeds, including dachshunds, corgis and basset hounds – have short legs due to the appearance of just one unique gene, a mutant growth-factor gene, said Wayne, whose recent research has identified genes responsible for short legs, small size, different fur types and different coat patterns and colors.
“It seems that in dogs, unlike other domesticated species, many of these different phenotypes [observable characteristics or traits of an organism] distill to just a handful of genes” that have been mixed with retrievers, herding dogs and sight hounds to create new breeds.
In man, most differences in height and weight involve many genes, each of which has only a small effect; most of the genes account for only about 1 percent or 2% of variability. Even in agricultural plants, most genes have only a small influence on a single trait.
In dogs, however, one gene that is responsible for differences in size accounts for more than 50% percent of the variation in body size, Wayne concluded.

Do ALL The Clinton Clan Have An Insatiable Taste For Things Jewish?
Written by Marty Roberts on March 7, 2010 – 2:11 pm -Seems that Chelsea Clinton has inherited Papa Bill Clinton’s predilection for opposite-sex members-of-the-clan (of the Jewish/Semitic variety).
Just for the record, there is no such thing as a “kosher” intermarriage involving a Jew. A Jew cannot marry a non-Jew and have the marriage recognized by Jewish law…period. You can make up all the lovey-dovey touchy-feely emotionally moving inter-faith ceremonies in the world, but none of them will be recognized by authentic, Torah Judaism. A Jewish man must marry a Jewish woman. Definition of Jewish…your mother was Jewish or you went through the appropriate conversion process…Sorry…That’s it…
Afraid in the future Mezvinsky-Clinton household we’re headed for Hannukah-Bush time…Not really Jewish, not really Christian…
BTW, as to the story about Ozzy Osbourne renewing vows with his wife…I don’t know what a Jewish Rabbi had to do with anything there..Sharon is NOT Jewish, only her father is…No Jewish mother=no Jewish child.

Jewish wedding ahead for Chelsea Clinton?
Among US Jews there has been more rejoicing than lamenting about interfaith union that brings former first daughter step closer to fold. Has Chelsea been searching for rabbi along with her gown?
Reprinted from YNet News
Her mother is a churchgoing Methodist. Her father is a Southern Baptist. Yet could Chelsea Clinton be planning one of the biggest Jewish weddings of the year? The 30-year-old graduate student and her Jewish fiancé, Marc Mezvinsky, 32, announced their engagement in November and told friends they were looking to a possible summer ceremony.
The families have revealed no specifics about the wedding.
Representatives for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton declined to answer questions about it, noting the family’s wish for privacy. In a February 7 interview on CNN, Hillary Clinton would go no further than to say her daughter hadn’t yet found a dress.
That hasn’t stopped the speculation. The bride and groom have a range of choices, including conversion or a melding their two traditions into one ceremony.
The talk has been strongest in the Jewish community. There has been more rejoicing than lamenting about this interfaith union that brings a former first daughter a step closer to the fold. Still, they wonder: Has Chelsea been searching for a rabbi along with her gown?
“If they had a Jewish wedding officiated by a rabbi, I think that would be something really positive,” said Ed Case, president of InterfaithFamily.com, which supports Jewish outreach to interfaith couples. “It’s so important for the Jewish community to have interfaith couples engaging in Jewish life.”
Chelsea Clinton grew up attending Methodist church with her mother. Bill Clinton has been close to his pastor in Arkansas, but the Southern Baptist Convention rebuked him years ago over his support for gay relationships and abortion rights.
Last year, Chelsea, a graduate student at Columbia University’s School of Public Health, was seen attending Yom Kippur services with Marc at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, the flagship for Conservative Judaism, according to news reports.
Mezvinsky is a son of former Pennsylvania Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and former Iowa Rep. Ed Mezvinsky, longtime friends of the Clintons. His parents, who are divorced, had attended a Conservative Jewish synagogue in Pennsylvania.
High rate of intermarriage
Hillary Clinton has strong ties of her own to the Jewish community from serving as a senator from New York.
“She has probably been in more temples by far than either you or I,” said Rabbi Jerome Davidson, rabbi emeritus at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck, which Hillary Clinton has visited.
No one is saying, though, what route Marc and Chelsea will take.
Conversion was the choice in one recent high-society mixed-faith romance. Ivanka Trump became Jewish to marry New York real estate executive Jared Kushner last year. But Chelsea does have other options if she would like to embrace Jewish traditions while remaining Christian.
Some rabbis will officiate at interfaith marriages even though major Jewish movements bar or discourage them from presiding. Interfaithfamily.com links interfaith couples with rabbis and cantors. Only a small number will co-officiate with clergy of another faith.
One of those is Rabbi Harold White, senior Jewish chaplain at Georgetown University, a Jesuit school, who performed the 2002 marriage of Ari Fleischer, press secretary under President George W. Bush, and Fleischer’s wife, Rebecca, who is Catholic. The ceremony was co-led by a priest and included a chuppah, or canopy, which is customary for Jewish weddings, a traditional glass-breaking, and a marriage contract, or ketubah.
A Methodist wedding would be far less complex.
The United Methodist Church allows local congregations and pastors to decide whether they should allow weddings involving one partner who is not a baptized Christian. The denomination’s Book of Worship allows ministers to adapt the wedding ceremony within limits, according to the Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards of the Methodist General Board of Discipleship.
The high rate of intermarriage has been an obsession in the Jewish community, which has struggled with how welcoming it should be to mixed-faith couples.
Rabbi Steven Carr Reuben of Kehillath Israel, a Reconstructionist congregation in Pacific Palasades, Calif., said even if Chelsea doesn’t have a Jewish wedding or convert, she should still be considered part of the community.
“There are Jews by birth and Jews by choice and Jews by association,” said Reuben, who has officiated at interfaith weddings for years and presided at the 2003 vow renewal of Ozzy Osbourne and his wife, Sharon, whose father is Jewish. “She’s marrying into the Jewish family.”
