Jonathan Pollard: A Jewish American Hero

Written by Marty Roberts on July 20, 2010 – 10:01 am -

Jonathan Pollard
Jonathan Pollard was born in America on August 7, 1954. He first studied history and philosophy at Stanford University (California), then Law at Notre Dame University (Indiana).

Pollard later accepted a job offer in the American intelligence services as a civilian Navy Intelligence Officer. In this context, he dealt with classified information concerning Israel’s security such as activities of Arab countries and terrorist groups hostile to Israel.

Despite a Convention of Reciprocity between the United States and Israel, certain information vital to Israeli security was being withheld by the United States.

Pollard considered he had a moral duty to warn Israel of the threat to its security. Pollard wrote, “I’d rather be rotting in prison than sitting “shiva” for the hundreds of thousands of Israelis who could have died because of my cowardice.”

In 1985, Jonathan Pollard was arrested and condemned to a life sentence without any possibility of parole for espionage in favor of Israel.

Many voices, including thousands of American lawyers and jurists, have denounced this unusually harsh sentence.

The median sentence for spying for an ally is 2-4 years.

On November 21, 2004, Jonathan Pollard entered the 20th year of his life sentence, with no end in sight

The Facts of Jonathan Pollard’s Case

(from www.jonathanpollard.org
1.Jonathan Pollard was a civilian Navy intelligence analyst who, in
the mid-1980s, discovered that information vital to Israel’s security
was being deliberately withheld by certain elements within the
American Administration.

2.Israel was legally entitled to this vital security information
according to a 1983 Letter of Understanding between herself and
the United States.

3.This information related to Syrian and Iraqi poison gas
production and nuclear capabilities being developed for use against
Israel, as well as planned terrorist attacks against Israeli civilian
targets.

4.When Pollard discovered this suppression of information and
asked his superiors about it, he was told to “mind his own
business”, and that “Jews get nervous talking about poison gas;
they don’t need to know.”

5.Pollard, who knew Israeli lives were being put in jeopardy as a
result of this conspiracy, did everything he could think of to have
the illegal embargo stopped and the flow of information restored.
When his efforts met no success, he began to give the information
to Israel directly.

6.Jonathan Pollard was an ideologue, not a mercenary. The FBI
concluded after nine months of polygraphing that Pollard acted for
ideological reasons only, not for profit. This fact was recognized by
the sentencing judge. (See the addendum for further details.)

7.In 1985, his actions were discovered by the U.S. government. His
instructions were to seek refuge in the Israeli embassy in
Washington.

8.When Pollard and his former wife sought refuge in the Israeli
Embassy, they were at first received and then summarily thrown out
into the waiting arms of the F.B.I.

9.Jonathan Pollard never had a trial. At the request of the U.S.
Government, Pollard entered into a plea agreement, which he
spared the U.S. a long, difficult, expensive and potentially
embarrassing trial.

10.Pollard fulfilled his end of the plea agreement, cooperating fully
with the prosecution.

11.Nevertheless, Pollard received a life sentence and a
recommendation that he never be paroled, as the government
violated every clause of the plea agreement.

12.Prior to sentencing, the then-Secretary of Defense Caspar
Weinberger delivered a long letter to the sentencing judge, in which
he falsely accused Pollard of being a traitor and demanded the
maximum sentence allowable.

13.Pollard was never charged with treason, only with one count of
passing classified information to an ally.

14.No one else in the history of the United States has ever received
a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally.

15.Even agents who have given information to enemy nations did
not receive such a heavy sentence.

16.Pollard appealed, but his appeal was rejected on a technicality:
that it had not been filed on time. Judge Williams wrote a minority
opinion, calling the majority decision “a complete and gross
miscarriage of justice.”

17.Jonathan Pollard was never indicted for harming the United
States. This is a separate charge and there is no evidence to support
such a charge.

18.Jonathan Pollard is now an Israeli citizen, who wishes only to
lead a quiet, private life.

On November 21, 2004, Jonathan Pollard entered the 20th year of his life sentence, with no end in sight

Release Jonathan Pollard NOW!!!

Written by Marty Roberts on March 10, 2010 – 9:40 am -

Jonathan Pollard is a hero. He risked all to protect Israel. He did nothing, really, to betray the United States, Israel’s strongest ally, yet he is paying dearly for his loyalty.
Almost 25 of his 55 years on earth spent in horrible conditions in a US prison. This is how America treats a “spy” for an allied country? For America’s closest friend, Israel?
Spies of enemy nations have not received such harsh treatment.
America, please, release Jonathon Pollard NOW!!!
Jonathon Pollard Haggadah

Special ‘Pollard Haggadah’ Issued

The holiday commemorating G-d’s redemption of His firstborn nation from Egyptian bondage is approaching, and a new Haggadah dedicated to Jonathan Pollard was issued Monday for the occasion.

Reprinted from INN Hillel Fendel

Pollard, 55, is now in his 25th year of incarceration in the United States, sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on one count of transferring classified information to US-ally Israel.

The publishers of the new Haggadah – the ritual text used to guide the annual festive Passover “seder” meal – say that Pollard’s extended imprisonment “is a test for us all regarding the extent of the mutual responsibility that lies at the base of our very national existence. Jonathan Pollard, may G-d strengthen him, has been decaying in U.S. prison for over 24 years, and if we are not privileged to see his release soon, this coming Seder night [March 29] will be his 25th in the prison of that ‘friendly nation.’”

This coming Sunday will mark 8,888 days that Pollard has been in prison.

Some 20,000 copies of the Haggadah will be printed, “and if we need more, we’ll print more,” said Asher Mivtzari, one of the forces behind the project. The book will be distributed in towns all around Israel as soon as it comes off the presses, and will be sold for the token price of ten shekels.

The Haggadah was edited by Rabbi Gabi Kadosh, the rabbi of the northern Negev town Shomriyah, where several dozens expelled Gush Katif families have made their home; he was the rabbi of the Gush Katif community of Ganei Tal for many years. Rabbi Kadosh compiled what many rabbis and public figures have said about Pollard, as well as Torah thoughts on the tremendous importance in Judaism of Redemption of Captives.

Passover was traditionally a time when extra efforts were made to redeem captives. The Book of Our Heritage, by Rabbi Eliyahu Ki-Tov, cites a traditional practice in many Jewish communities “that on the morning of Passover eve, the leaders of the community would go to the jails in and around their town, checking to see if there were any Jewish prisoners, whom they would then attempt to free.”

Asked why no English edition is available, Mivtzari explained that the first priority in the campaign to free Pollard is Israel, where it is hoped that public pressure will be exerted on the government to work for his release. “In addition, the entire project was done amazingly quickly and there was no time to think of adding anything else,” Mivtzari said.

The name of the new publication is “Freedom Haggadah: Let’s not ‘pass over’ our brother Jonathan.” Volunteers will sell it door-to-door, and copies can be ordered at .

From the book’s introduction:
“Jonathan sacrificed his freedom for me, for you and for all of us, so that we would be able to live as free people in the Land of Israel, with our children forever. He simply wanted us to live and not die, that we should not fall victim to the evil schemes of those who hate us and want to destroy us… He is paying a terrible price: separated from his wife and imprisoned in disgraceful conditions that impair his health and endanger his life.”
