Just the Latest Excuse for the Palestinians Not to Talk Peace With Israel…And a Lame One, at Best

Written by Marty Roberts on March 11, 2010 – 5:44 pm -

I told you that they were just looking for another excuse NOT to come to the peace table. After all, why should the palestinians negotiate when the world is ready to give them everything they want on a silver platter, without them having to give up ANYTHING…
So now, they have their newest excuse for not negotiating…Israel is building homes for her citizens in her capital city….BTW, a building plan that was approved THREE YEARS AGO!!!
Biden and Abbas

Amr Moussa: Talks on hold

Abbas reportedly halts indirect negotiations due to Ramat Shlomo plans

Reprinted from Jerusalem Post

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will not enter indirect peace talks with Israel as planned, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said overnight Wednesday, due to the approval of plans to build 1,600 housing units in Ramat Shlomo in east Jerusalem.

“The Palestinian president has decided that he does not intend to enter negotiations at this stage,” Moussa said at a press conference in Cairo.

A senior PA official in Ramallah had said Wednesday that the PA would resume talks with Israel in the coming days, despite the threats and strong condemnations coming from Ramallah.

The official’s comments came after visiting US Vice President Joe Biden condemned the plan for the second time in 24 hours, this time standing in Ramallah next to Abbas.

“Yesterday the decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for new housing units in east Jerusalem undermined that very trust, the trust that we need right now in order to begin as well as have profitable negotiations. That is why I immediately condemned the action,” Biden said after meeting Abbas.

US VP Biden Condemns Israel for Building in Her Capital, Jerusalem

Written by Marty Roberts on March 10, 2010 – 4:49 pm -

The US has a lot of nerve…not to mention the UN and the Arab League. Basically, Israel building homes for her citizens in her capital is none of their goldang business!!
First of all, Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish state for more than 2000 years. It has NOT ever been the capital of any other country. Anyone can claim anyplace as the capital of their country, but first, they should have a country, and then, it would help if there was some sort of historic basis to their claim…Neither of which is the case when it comes to so-called palestinians and Jerusalem. In case you forgot, Jerusalem is city #3 in importance to Islam…They pray with their behinds facing Jerusalem. Every Jew in the world faces Jerusalem to pray, wherever they are in the world.
Secondly, if you ask the Arabs living in the neighborhood where the building is slated to take place…They are HAPPY to have the additional housing units in their neighborhood. The tradesmen and shopkeepers cannot wait to start earning money from the increased population in their area. I just heard some of them interviewed on the radio, and, although fearful to speak out in public, that is what they said.
Oh, and I condemn the decision by the US government to build new apartments in Washington D.C….Very counterproductive…(even if you Do look cute wearing that silly black yarmulke)
Biden

Biden Condemns Construction Project in Israel’s Capital

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden flatly condemned a years-old city construction project in Israel’s capital late Tuesday, saying it is “undermining the trust” needed to jump-start final status talks with the Palestinian Authority.

Reprinted from INN Hana Levi Julian

“I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem,”
Biden said in a prepared statement. “The substance and timing of the announcement, particularly with the launching of proximity talks, is precisely the kind of step that undermines the trust we need right now and runs counter to the constructive discussions that I’ve had here in Israel.”

The term “proximity talks” is the new phrase that refers to final status negotiations between Israel and the PA, so called because the Obama administration will now be serving as an intermediary. PA Chairman and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas and his aides have refused to meet for direct talks with Prime Minister Netanyahu and other top government officials.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also slammed the government’s approval of the project, issuing a statement Wednesday that said “the settlement activity is contrary to Israel’s obligations under the Roadmap, and undermines any movement towards a viable peace process.”

According to the Interior Ministry, which also issued a statement Tuesday night, the authorization for the project, a plan by the Jerusalem District Planning Committee to build 1,600 housing units in eastern Jerusalem, was routine. Interior Minister Eli Yishai said the announcement had been a “procedural matter,” and not a deliberate attempt to insult Biden or anyone else. He added that he regretted the timing and would have delayed the announcement had he been aware it was coming up.

The project, slated for the hareidi-religious neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, had been on the table for more than three years, did not require approval of the prime minister, and has been submitted for public comment – a 60-day process. It is still subject to final approval, and still must be reviewed by the committee. If after that process it passes muster, the project will extend the existing neighborhood by adding an access road from the west, upgrading the current entrance road, and adding apartments on the southeastern side. Each apartment will be approximately 120 square meters (1,290 square feet). The total project will comprise some 580 dunams (143 acres).

The Interior Ministry said in its statement that Netanyahu had been unaware of the plan and its timing.

Biden’s statement was issued at the close of his second day in the region on a visit that was promoted primarily as confidence-building mission meant to emphasize America’s support for Israel. “There is no space between us,” Biden told Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu during their meeting in Jerusalem on Monday.

The prime minister responded by telling journalists following their two-hour meeting that the American vice president was “a real friend to me, and a real friend to Israel and to the Jewish people.” Biden is the latest in a parade of American officials to arrive in Israel in recent weeks on a mission to keep the Netanyahu administration in line with American policy on Iran and talks with the PA.

Last November, Netanyahu responded to pressure from the White House by authorizing a freeze on construction in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. However, he was unwilling to extend that freeze to the neighborhoods of Jerusalem that were restored to the capital following the 1967 Six Day War — a point of contention with the PA which has refused to resume talks with Israel until those areas are included.

Just Another Excuse for Anti-Israel Hatred and Violence

Written by Marty Roberts on March 2, 2010 – 11:53 am -

It is very obvious to us here, in Israel, that the palestinians are making a concentrated effort to stir things up in the region. They are using Israel’s statement about Jewish heritage to stimulate a conflagration of violence, which they hope will spread throughout the region, leading to war and, ultimately, Israel’s annihilation (they hope). No state-building, no building of infrastructure, no building of institutions, no economic development…Just hatred and violence. They don’t want a state, they want to eliminate the existing state of Israel. that is enough to satisfy palestinian aspirations. They don’ have what it takes to build a nation. Maybe because they are NOT really a nation…just a collection of wandering arabs from the region…THAT is the reality…We have seen this SO many times before, but the world just buys it, lock, stock and barrel. Any excuse for anti-semitism, anti-israel-ism…
Clashes in Hebron

ME anger at Israeli ‘escalations’

Clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protestors over the issue of holy sites have provoked a wave of condemnation in the Arab press for Israel’s behaviour

Reprinted from BBC News

On Sunday several Palestinians were arrested after Israeli security forces entered the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem. The incident followed clashes in the West Bank town of Hebron on Friday over Israel’s decision to list two disputed shrines as heritage sites.

The Palestinian press painted Israel’s actions as a deliberate attempt to escalate conflict in the region. Newspapers in the Middle East condemned what was perceived as a concerted effort to oppress Islamic identity and set back the peace process.

In Israel, one editorial acknowledged that the decision to list the disputed shrines may have been a “tactical mistake”, while another commentator attacked the US response to the issue.

EDITORIAL IN PALESTINIAN AL-QUDS

The fresh Israeli aggression against the sanctity of the al-Aqsa mosque, and the attacks on worshippers by the Israeli security apparatus, represent the latest in a series of Israeli escalations over the past few weeks… they show that [Israel] is determined to escalate and even expand the conflict.

AYMAN ABU-NAHIYAH IN PALESTINIAN FILASTIN

The Judaization of Hebron… is a prelude to the Judaization of the al-Aqsa mosque and the rest of Palestine… this will include the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes and the seizure of their properties.

TALAL AKWAL IN PALESTINIAN AL-AYYAM

The US silence shows that ongoing attempts to resume negotiations have stalled and that those might have to wait until after a new Palestinian intifadah or even war.

EDITORIAL IN EGYPT’S AL-JUMHURIYAH

Israeli plans to Judaize the al-Aqsa mosque and other occupied Islamic places are being implemented without any respect to religious or man-made laws… these extremely racist practices will not halt… until Arab and Islamic countries have the teeth to enforce international law.

EDITORIAL IN SAUDI AL-JAZIRAH

The Israelis are working incessantly to change everything in Palestine and give it a Jewish aspect in a bid to wipe out Arab and Islamic identity… meanwhile, Arabs and Muslims are preoccupied [with their own affairs] while the Palestinians are preparing to fight each other.

EDITORIAL IN IRAN’S AL-VEFAGH

Israel’s plan to swallow Palestine has reached a peak… its project is to wipe Palestine from the map… an escalation rather than a settlement is looming in the region.

EDITORIAL IN SYRIA’S AL-BA’TH

The Israeli occupation of holy sites and the symbols of Palestinian heritage is part of a comprehensive Israeli war to Judaize the Palestinian areas and eliminate their Arab and Islamic identity.

OFIR HAIVRI IN ISRAEL’S YEDIOT AHARANOT

The [US] State Department spokesman Mark Toner has condemned the inclusion of the Cave of the Patriarchs and Rachel’s Tomb in the list of Jewish heritage sites… the State Department did not bother to demand details… the way the matter was dealt with… is not only amateurish but could also have disastrous implications for an explosive region like ours.

EDITORIAL IN ISRAEL’S JERSULALEM POST

The Jewish people’s historic connection to the sites in question does not require cabinet approval to be deemed legitimate… the [national heritage] list could have been left ambiguous… still, if [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu made a tactical mistake, the immediate Palestinian resort to violence was deliberate and inexcusable.

Wake Up and Smell the Preparation H, Your Royal Highness, King of Jordan

Written by Marty Roberts on March 1, 2010 – 10:24 am -

Now the “king” of Jordan is getting into the act. BTW, his dynasty extends all the way back, almost 100 whole years!!!. A dynasty created by the occupying Europeans of the Middle East to try and get some stability in the wacked out countries being run by wandering nomads. Some royal line…For sure Abdullah is afraid of the power of the more than 60% of his country made up of palestinians…That’s why JORDAN was supposed to be and SHOULD be the palestinian state, not Israel. Anyway…Given the fact that the Al Aqusa mosque is sitting on the holiest site in Judaism, and Israel lets it remain there, I don’t quite get just what is provocative in Israel’s behavior…We just declared sites in Hebron and Bethlehem Jewish Heritage sites, nothing at all in “east” Jerusalem…we don’t even conduct the archeological excavations that SHOULD be carried out on the temple mount, due to Muslim “sensitivities”. Time to get real, Your Highness….(snicker, snicker)
Abbas and Abdullah

King of Jordan: Protect holy sites from Israel

In meeting with Abbas in Amman, King Abdullah warns of ‘dangerous consequences of provocative Israeli moves and aggressive acts against al-Aqsa Mosque.’ He adds that steps taken ‘constitute dangerous provocation that threatens efforts to achieve regional peace’

Reprinted from Ynetnews Roee Nahmias

Israel’s eastern neighbor makes a call for action: King Abdullah of Jordan said Sunday that the international community must take immediate measures to protect the holy sites in east Jerusalem from unilateral moves on Israel’s part.

According to him, Israel’s moves seek to alter Jerusalem’s identity and constitute a dangerous provocation that threatens all efforts invested in achieving regional peace.

Jordan’s official news agency, Petra, reported that during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman the Jordanian king warned against “the dangerous consequences of provocative Israeli moves and acts of aggression against the al-Aqsa Mosque – moves with Jordan condemns.”

King Abdullah emphasized that his country will continue to invest efforts in protecting the holy sites in Jerusalem. In addition, Abdullah highlighted Jordan’s rejection and rebuke of Israel’s decision to include Rachel’s Tomb and the Cave of the Patriarchs on its list of national heritage sites.

During the meeting – which was attended by senior Jordanian officials, including Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, and senior Palestinians, including their head of negotiation team Saeb Erekat – the two sides discussed efforts being put forth in order to overcome the hurdles to renewing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process on the basis of a two-state solution, a set timetable, and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Jordanian king reiterated his country’s support for the Palestinian Authority and efforts to reinstate the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to an independent country.

Negotiations With The Palestinians Have No Meaning

Written by Marty Roberts on February 21, 2010 – 10:44 am -

Once again, the palestinian leadership under Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazzen) proves that the negotiaion process with Israel is meaningless. What is the purpose of negotiations if one party will only “negotiate” issues that have bee pre-determined prior to the actual talks? This is what the palestinians insist on…

Abbas considers options on peace talks restart

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is considering his options on resuming indirect peace talks with Israel after meeting U.S. and European diplomats this week, a senior aide said Friday.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters)

“We have asked for an official meeting of Arab ministers of the follow-up committee and have told them that our consultations, coordinations and inquiries are still ongoing with the Americans, Europeans, Russians and the United Nations,” chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

Erekat dismissed an Israeli newspaper report Friday that Abbas had told Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger at a meeting this week in Ramallah that U.S.-mediated peace talks could resume in the coming days.

The Haaretz report said Spindelegger told Israeli officials he had heard from Abbas of his readiness to resume talks.

“The one who announces the Palestinian position is the Palestinian side, not Haaretz or the Austrian foreign minister,” Erekat said.

An Israeli diplomatic source in Jerusalem said: “There is no official word from the Americans or the Palestinians but there have been all kinds of messages from Western diplomats indicating that talks could restart.”

There was no comment from Vienna.

Abbas has been seeking details from U.S. officials on how a proposal that Washington would host “proximity talks” involving Israeli and Palestinian envoys would work.

Aides say Abbas wants guarantees that any such talks would quickly move to seeking final agreements on the core issues of the conflict — borders, settlements, right of return for Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem — witin specific terms of reference and a set timeline.

Abbas broke off negotiations with the previous Israeli government in December 2008 in protest at its offensive in the Gaza Strip and has refused to hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while Israel expands West Bank settlements.

In November, Netanyahu ordered a 10-month building freeze in some settlements on land Israel captured in 1967. The United States and Western powers want Abbas to drop his demand for a total freeze and get back to negotiations.

Has the UN Reached the End of the Line?

Written by Marty Roberts on February 19, 2010 – 5:19 pm -

Everybody talks about the palestinian refugees. What about a million JEWISH refugees of Arab countries in the Middle East? What about THEIR “right of return”? How about compensation for them? Where is UNWRA now?…

United Nations

Israel vies to bring Mideast Jewish refugees into talks
BY RACHELLE KLIGER / THE MEDIA LINE
18/02/2010 18:40

New bill to seek compensation for eastern Jews and cement their narrative as an integral part of any future peace negotiations.

Israeli lawmakers are seeking a law that will make compensation for Jewish refugees expelled from Arab countries after 1948 an integral part of any future peace negotiations.

Lawmakers put together a bill demanding compensation on behalf of current Jewish Israeli citizens, who were expelled from Arab countries after Israel was established in 1948, leaving behind a significant amount of valuable property.

Originally submitted almost a year ago to the Knesset, the bill passed its first hearing two weeks ago. Now various interest groups are pushing the bill with the Knesset’s 120 members before it is subjected to a second and third hearing next week.

The bill was sponsored by MK Nissim Ze’ev (Shas) and follows a resolution passed in the US House of Representatives in 2008, calling for refugee recognition to be extended to Jews and Christians similar to that extended to Palestinians in the course of Middle East peace talks.

“I think the term ‘compensation’ is too limited a term,” former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler told The Media Line.

Cotler, a vocal advocate of the campaign, was one of several international representatives at the Knesset conference discussing the bill, organized by MK Nissim Ze’ev on Monday.

“We’re not just speaking about financial compensation or indemnification,” Cotler said. “We’re talking about justice for Jews from Arab countries. This speaks to the question of, among other things, rectifying the justice and peace narrative of the last 62 years where the question of Jews from Arab countries has not been part of the narrative.”

“There have been more than 160 UN resolutions on the matter of refugees,” he continued. “All 160 dealt with Palestinian refugees only. I’m not saying they shouldn’t address Palestinian refugees, but I’m saying there’s no justice and no truth if it does not also address the plight of Jews seeking justice from Arab countries.”

According to the international advocacy group, Justice for Jews from Arab Countries (JJAC), some 850,000 Jews were displaced from Arab countries after the State of Israel was established. These include Jews from Syria, Trans-Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.

Speaker of the Knesset Rubi Rivlin (Likud Party) said the issue was an important counterweight to Palestinian claims for a right of return to homes from which they were expelled or had to leave in 1948, and which are now part of Israel.

“The Arab peace initiative, based on the Saudi initiative, has a clause that calls for a just solution to the Palestinian refugee issue,” Rivlin said at the conference. “Israel is opposed to the right of return… we have to make an appeal today, to say that there is no room for bringing up the Palestinian right of return without the Jewish refugee issue being resolved. This has to be heard in the political discourse in Israel and in the international community.”

Rep. Eliot Engel (D – NY), who supported the congressional resolution and attended Monday’s conference, said there was hypocrisy in the way the international community dealt with the Palestinian refugee community.

“The Arabs today, as they have done for 50 years, use the Palestinian refugee population as political pawns,” Engel said. “They want them to live in misery. They want them to suffer and then to blame the Jews. The fact of the matter is that the blame lies right at the foot of the Arab states, be it Saudi Arabia or Jordan or Egypt or any of those countries that have lots of petro-dollars and they don’t even spend a shekel to help their refugees.”

Monday’s conference was marked by heated arguments from members of the audience, which included Jews who were expelled from Arab countries in the years following the establishment of the state.
