Happy “Little” Purim to You All!!!

What is the significance of the “Hidden Hand of The Creator” pulling strings behind the scenes? This is, indeed, the over-riding theme in the story of the first attempted “Final Solution” for the Jews….the story of Purim. This edition of “The Marty Roberts Show”, recorded on “Purim Katan”, or the “small” holiday of Purim in the first month of Adar, is devoted to discussing just that…how, quite often, things are NOT REALLY as they seem on the surface.

Marty is fond of saying that….

“COINCIDENCE is just The Almighty’s way of remaining anonymous!!!”

Purim is one of the stranger Jewish Holiday…but it also shares the distinction, with only ONE other Holy Day, Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement, as being singled out in the Talmud for the ONLY TWO holidays that will continue to be celebrated in The World-to-Come!!!

What’s so special about this day?

The story of Purim details the saving of the Jewish People, living in exile in Persia, from total destruction, the original “Final Solution” of the evil Haman. The salvation is clearly made possible by a series of miraculous events…but NOT ONCE is the Name of G-d mentioned in the entire story!!!! All of the miracles take place within the framework of “nature”. And what, after all, is “nature”, anyway?

Maybe THAT is exactly the message!!!

Today, we are talking about “Purim Katan”, or “Little” Purim. This year is a “leap year” in the Jewish calendar.

The Jewish calendar is a complicated combination of Lunar (moon-based) months, joined together to make up a solar year. This makes the individual months predictable, but can lead to problems with the seasons staying attached to particular months!!! (as they DO NOT in the Moslem lunar calendar)

The ancient Jewish Sages, who were quite expert in astronomy, and they developed a nineteen-year cycle, which included seven “leap years”, each providing for an additional month. This repeating cycle assures a regular, steady flow of the months, while keeping the holidays in their proper seasons!!!!

Rabbi Yosef: Drunkenness is abominable

In his weekly sermon, Shas’ spiritual leader retells Book of Esther, warns against intoxication during Purim. ‘During holiday one must drink very little, only as symbolic act to remember Ahasuerus’ feast – without getting intoxicated,’ he says

Shas’ spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia, Yosef saaid Saturday evening that “drunkenness is an abominable and nefarious act” and that in Purim one must drink very little wine, only as a symbolic act to remember Ahasuerus’ feast – without getting intoxicated.

In his weekly sermon Saturday eve, Yosef said, “Haman was intoxicated, but we must act with good manners.” The rabbi recommended drinking until one falls asleep – a situation in which one does not distinguish between ‘Haman the agitate’ and ‘Mordechai the blessed’.”

“A man that is drunk – what good is he?” wondered Rabbi Yosef, and stated that instead a man must “take a rest, rise up and practice religion throughout the day. Some people are up to no good. They get drunk and then take the bus and act in a rowdy manner – that is defamation of God,” he said.

Hours after The Book of Esther was read throughout the country, Rabbi Yosef retold the tale, while adding his own interpretation and humor. He added that the people of Israel were rescued by the Torah, and called on the public to donate to the institutions where the Torah was being taught.

The rabbi noted that one does not fulfill the mitzvah of exchanging Purim gifts (mishloah manot) by giving them to gentiles, and explained that the purpose of the tradition was to “show a lot of affection and love,” and therefore it did not matter if it was given to “a Hassid, a Lithuanian or a proselyte.”
